I am still having fun with and learning a lot with my 2020 movie project of watching all 50 movies listed in the cool book from Turner Classic Movies (TCM) called Must-See Sci-Fi: 50 Movies that Are Out of This World by Sloan De Forest (Running Press, 2018; available at Amazon.com and Shop TCM). You can run but you can’t hide from this week’s TCM “Must-See Sci-Fi” pic INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1956). Tensions run high as aliens try to make duplicates of everybody in town. The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)

This week’s TCM “Must-See Sci-Fi” film is THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN (1957). The title character is just a regular American dude who, after getting exposed to a strange substance, begins to shrink an inch a week. I found this film to be surprisingly effective as everyday objects and what we think as normal and safe environments become terrifying obstacles for our minuscule hero. This week’s TCM “Must-See Sci-Fi” is another monster movie from the 1950s—THE FLY (1958). An errant fly causes a scientist’s matter transporter experiment to go horribly wrong. Stars Al Hedison as the said scientist. Also stars Patricia Owens (pictured), Herbert Marshall, and Vincent Price. Since we’re still social distancing from home, Friday evenings have now become Sci-Fi Friday Nights at my place. Next up in the TCM “Must-See Sci-Fi” project is THE BLOB (1958). Author Sloan De Forest calls it “science fiction’s most celebrated slime of all time…A tour de force of 1950s low-budget filmmaking.” With its “campy concept, a surprisingly sensitive and optimistic script, and a young(ish) Steve McQueen in his first starring role—THE BLOB has slithered its way into the hearts of fans for generations.” Directed by Irvin S. The Time Machine (1960)

It’s a double feature tonight for Sci-Fi Friday Night at Movies Past and Present HQ! Next up in the TCM “Must-See Sci-Fi” project is THE TIME MACHINE (1960). Based on the 1895 novel by futurist H.G. Wells, the film tells the story of an inventor who builds a time-traveling machine that takes him 800,000 years into the future. Author Sloan De Forest calls it “an escapist sci-fi adventure for the ages.” I call it a bonkers romp. Stars Rod Taylor and Yvette Mimieux.
