Loved seeing To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) on the big screen, this month’s entry in the Turner Classic Movies (TCM) Big Screen Classics series. It also was this week’s selection in my TCM Essentials quest.

The Criterion Channel launches on April 8! It’s not too late to sign up for a charter membership and enjoy their “Movie of the Week” via your browser on your computer or smartphone. Last week’s “Movie of the Week” was the classic film noir Detour (1945). This week’s film is the bonkers Czechoslovak film The Fabulous Baron Munchausen (1962).

  • Casablanca in Concert with the great Utah Symphony was amazing. It was also a wonderful way to knock another film off of my TCM Essentials list. (FYI, the Utah Symphony is doing Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope in Concert this May.) Look for this type of experience with your local symphony!
  • A tribute to 20th Century Fox is happening at this year’s Turner Classic Movies (TCM) Classic Film Festival. Additional 35mm nitrate screenings have been announced for the festival as well.

  • February’s TCM Big Screen Classics film is the film adaptation of the Broadway musical smash My Fair Lady (1964). The film screens on two days only–February 17 and 20. Details are at FathomEvents.com. Go see it! (And here’s an interesting story about Audrey Hepburn’s singing voice, Marni Nixon.)
  • The Oscars are happening on February 24 on ABC. Select movie theater chains across the country are offering special discounted passes to see all eight of the Best Picture nominees, including Megaplex Theatres, Cinemark, and AMC. It’s a great deal to see some great movies on the big screen.

It’s a very special Christmas podcast this week and our last podcast of 2018. We’ll resume in January. Thanks for listening!

Reviews

The Christmas classics series continues with The Bishop’s Wife (1947). Also reviewed are Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Mary Poppins Returns (2018).

Classic Cinema Corner

Christmas Day is going to be a delight on TCM with an evening full of comedies. Check tcm.com/schedule for the latest details. Also, TCM is playing six films starring Burt Reynolds on December 26 to honor his passing last September.

I often like to have a movie challenge/project during any given year, so for 2019, I’m going to watch all 52 films listed in Jeremy Arnold‘s outstanding TCM book The Essentials: 52 Must-See Movies and Why They Matter. Many films I’ve already seen, some I haven’t. I hope you’ll consider joining in, too!

Recommendations

I hope to see a bunch of movies over the Christmas holiday, but for now, I still recommend Ralph Breaks the Internet, along with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Mary Poppins Returns.
